Becky at Holiday in the Sun is the fabulous host of "We Did It! Wednesday." "We Did It! Wednesday" is all about quality one-on-one time with our children and grandchildren, and sharing ideas of fun things to do together!! You can click on over to Becky and see what others are doing and pick up a few ideas. If you've read my recent posts, you know we have been in desperate need of crazy fun at our house, so when the kids asked if they could build a fort last Friday afternoon, I thought yep! that's exactly what we'll do. And we did it!
Personal insight: this goes completely contrary to my "need for control" nature. Our house is residence to five kids under the age of seven, and extra chaos is not usually something I am open to having more of. During the day we co-exist with pillow trampoline piles, block towers, arts and crafts centers, Lego super-structures, baby doll hospitals and car parades in seemingly every corner of the house. Having a picked up living room in the evening helps preserve my sanity.
A Friday night fort was a big step...but I closed my eyes and took the plunge. Did I mention that was last Friday?!?! Each morning the kids begged for one more day. After all, what good is a fort if you can't play in it? And play they have. For five days and nights this lovely fort has been the focal point in our house. It has been made and remade many, many times and we're pretty sure we now have the perfect model.Even the stuffed animals were considered...
The most amazing part to me is that the kids have actually slept. Really well. Maybe we're on to something. Except for the aforementioned sanity factor, bedrooms could be highly overrated! (Note: Aiden's "Davy Crockett" hat because every fort needs a real pioneer).
As with most excitement in life, all good things must come to an end, so our fort is being disassembled this morning. But you know what? It's been really fun. It was just what we needed. And I haven't gone crazy!

So very cute! I remember Steve & I built forts in our living room almost every Saturday morning with some dining room chairs and a blanket. Good times and great memories. They'll remember it forever.. and ask for it again soon I'm sure. Love you!
Oh Sara!!! You have really captured the spirit and essence of We Did It! Wednesday and I just LOVE it!!
What a great idea!! I, like you, have let kids build forts, but I have NEVER let them keep it up that long!! HATS OFF TO YOU, GIRL!!
You didn't go crazy because God was pleased with your selflessness!! A lesson we can all learn from!!
And your children are adorable...gotta love Davy!!! Too cute!!
Thanks so much...this made my day!!
Blessings,
Becky
I'm agreeing with Becky, it perfectly captures We Did It! They all look so happy--and I'm sure it also gave you a much needed break. They'll remember that fun for years to come☺
Wishing a day of blessings for you♥
These pictures are priceless, the memories that were made will last a lifetime!!! Thank you for sharing.
Blessings,
Sue
I give you all the credit...I could never do it. I don't care for forts in my house, I like it all organized for my sake and sanity. Davey has one tent that we use and he has tried to make many forts with the pillows and sofa cushions, but I don't give in! Yes, I am a mean mom! Good going, your kids will remember that day!
Oh! That sounds like my house!! Mind you I too struggle with the issue! I would love the house to be all organised and clutter free. But you know the saying "If you can't beat them, join them". I still have to learn to relax a little though. I do let them play with whatever they want, but sometimes I feel so stressed with the mess. Then when it's all cleared I say to myself: See verything is dome now. What was the fuss all about?
Hi Sara,
I am new to blogger and to We did it Wednesdays. Yours really touched my heart...I have four kids (teenagers now) and we used to make forts all the time...We were a military family when my kids were little and when daddy was gone...we made forts in the living room and we made popcorn, read books, played games and slept there...I miss doing those things so much! Thank you so much for sharing it with us and taking me back down memory lane!
I look forward to getting to know you better!
Have a great day!
Yes! I forgot to mention that his 'gun' was a small toddler-size mop! I don't give him guns either!
You rock Sara!! You totally rock, dear friend. Your love for your children is always so apparent, and you are giving them memories that will keep them warm for years to come. And you know, taking our hands of the wheel every now and then and letting things free-wheel can work wonders (especially for those of us who know how we like things, and like things how we know!!)
And, if you have found a way to make it stick then I say you all move to the sitting room and make it a communal family bed for the foreseeable future!! If it works then go with it girl!! Loving your attitude and the smile in your heart in this post! You'll have to think of something different for this Friday now for them!!
Thinking of you tonight and always x
Very cute. I remember doing the same thing with Olivia and Michael when they were little. They loved it. Only I kept the chaos confined to the dinning room. I don't think I could handle the whole living room like that!! Way to go Sara!!!
Oh, wonderful! I must join in the we did it wednesday! Imagine making the entire room into a fort! Your kids look like they enjoy your house very much.
So, so sweet! I love it and you can be sure those kids will remember it all their lives! Fun, fun, fun!
Building memories that they will never forget!! I love this!
