A New Model

We have a sad, sick baby at our house...
Unfortunately, our sad, sick baby doesn't like baths, in fact she loathes them. I'm pretty sure the whole neighborhood knows when Spider-Girl is taking a bath because the rafters of our house rattle with her screams of terror and anguish. Needless to say, baths are not at all soothing and mostly counterproductive, even in illness.

Yesterday, I was attempting to feed our sad, sick baby some watermelon chunks. I mortgaged the house and bought it out of season for my sweet girl (sweet being relative amidst the sad and sick), thinking it would brighten her day and keep her hydrated. Instead of loving it, however, she threw her head back in agony, clamped her teeth shut and wriggled as far to the corner of her high chair as possible. She wanted nothing to do with it. Seriously, what child doesn't like watermelon?!

Tongue-in-cheek, I implored her, "You don't like baths, you don't like watermelon. That is so un-Somma. Did we bring the wrong baby home from the hospital?!"

Her four-year-old brother and three-year-old sister were observing the scene:

Davy Crockett piped up: "Hooray!! Maybe we can get a new baby!!"

To which Giggles replied: "Yeah, one that doesn't CRY!!"

Their summations came a little too quickly and sounded a little too rehearsed.

Poor sad, sick baby.

The 'Old' Days

On our drive home from church last night we took turns sharing what we had learned. Most interesting was what Davy Crockett shared from his 4's and 5's Sunday School class:

"Adam and Eve ate the fruit and then they saw that they had no skin."

"They had no skin?"

"I mean they didn't have any clothes." Growing more emphatic and animated as only Davy Crockett can be, he continued, "And they didn't even have any underwear. But that's okay because it was the really old days!"

We'll be reviewing Genesis 3 as part of Bible time this morning.

Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. Genesis 3:7

Heard at our House Today...

My soon-to-be three year old son is in a new phase. He claims he doesn't like anything. Especially if it pertains to food (except Skittles, but that's another story for another time).

For the last couple of weeks when Aiden's breakfast, lunch or dinner is placed before him, he says "What is that?" I briefly explain what we're having and he responds with "I don't like (fill in the blank)." He always ends up eating it (because at our house if you don't eat what you're served, you starve!), but the routine has become a little old.

This morning at breakfast I asked him if he was going to finish his applesauce...the applesauce his sister pain-stakingly made. "I don't like applesauce," was his eloquent reply.

Growing weary of his obstinance, I inquired, "Aiden, is there anything you DO you like?"

He thought for a moment and replied, "I like eggs. (pause) And ketchup."

Oh good. I feel so much better!

Heard at Our House Today...

Aiden is trying his best to digest all that he's learning from our Bible teachings. However, angels and a worldwide flood are a little complicated for a two year old to understand.

During our recent snow the kids spent lots of time falling backwards and making snow angels all over the yard. This morning Aiden was standing on our bed and flopped himself backwards. After waving his arms for a moment, he stood up and said: "Look, Mom, I made a 'snow Jesus'!"

And another one (thanks for humoring me!)...

We were talking recently about Noah and God's plan to destroy the people of his day with the great flood. The kids were especially taken by the fact that only eight people survived in the ark.

Although we weren't personally affected by the Western Washington flooding this week, our neighboring town and many of its surrounding farms were. We didn't venture out while Steve was in New York, so our trip to church this morning was our first outing since the waters crested the river that separates our island from the mainland.

As we were getting ready to leave, Steve said, "C'mon guys, let's get going so we have time to see the floods."

Aiden was very concerned by this and looked at his dad imploringly, "No, Dad, I don't want to die!"

Guess we have a little more teaching to do!

Kid Funny

As the eldest sister of the bunch, Avery takes her responsibility very seriously:

"Mom, I couldn't find Lydia's boppy (pacifier), so I gave her my nose!"

Kid Funny

Avery and Aiden on worms:

Aiden (with stick in hand and deep two year old voice): "I'm gonna kill this guy."

Avery (who is digging a nice hole and using a roof shingle for 'carpet'): "No Aiden, don't! They want to be friends and play together."
